WEEK IN REVIEW # 9: State Meet 2005

DIVISION 1 GIRLS: PADUA ACADEMY
The Pandas recorded their 3rd consecutive championship, putting all 5 scorers in the top 10, and  scoring a dual meet winning 27 points . Jen Watunya led the way all year and did again here.  Senior MaryKate McCaffery had a fine season and Frosh Morgan Morrow emerged in the second half of the year to provide a huge 2-3 punch.  Senior Sam Lichtner survived injuries to contribute in the big meets at the end and Frosh Meghan Smith was solid all season.  AI DuPont finished a fine year with a solid second place here.  The Kauffman twins Aurora and Sophia were the foundation and were aided greatly by the addition of freshman Amber Turner and the emergence of soph Kelsy McCormick.  However it was the super race (22nd) by soph Camille Legge that enabled the Tigers to hold off late charging St. Mark's in this one.  Maureen Stringham and Alison Zukowski led the Spartans to third place with big help coming from 9th graders Devin Sullivan, Heather Harrison and Kara Pollock.
Anna Brousell ended her great HS XC career with another championship.  Congratulations Anna and best of luck at William & Mary.

BOYS DIVISION 1: SALESIANUM SCHOOL
The Sals won their 32nd  state championship in the last 36 years, the 15th under Coach Ralph Heiss.  Dominic DellaPelle was the individual champ while seniors James Jennings, Danny Segars and Josh Hill (6th, 7th, 9th) came up big in their last races.  Junior Mike Curry in 13th closed out the scoring.  Drew Hoffman's runnerup performance led St. Mark's to 2nd place overall with big help from Nick Pyle who had a great year and sophs Mike O'Brian and Tyler Rodgers along with seniors Greg Mionske, Dan Traub and Scott Higgins.  Andy Weaver led CSW to a solid third.

GIRL'S DIVISION 2: TATNALL SCHOOL

The Hornet girls squad had a season to remember, winning their 3rd straight DII title and winding up the 3rd ranked team in the Southeast in the Nike Team National standings.  A team effort all the way, Katie Kershner, Annie Castagno and freshman Juliet Bottorff finished in a virtual tie for the individual title.  Joanie Castagno and Alex Clapp weren't far behind as the team scored 23 points and set an all-time margin of victory mark of 82 points over runnerup Archmere.  The Auks packed all their scorers between 15th and 31st place and edged out Tower Hill who were led by first year runner Sydney Scott who finished 4th and Sara Adelman (8th) and Anna Pike (11th).  Julia Byrnes, Beth Malseed and Erica Jackey paced the Auks.  In an odd note, 4th place St. Andrew's had 3 of their 7 runners DQ'ed for wearing different uniforms and had to take a phantom score for their 5th runner.

BOYS DIVISION 2: TATNALL SCHOOL

Tatnall's boys made it a sweep, the first ever for one school.  Brian Sklodowski finished an outstanding campaign with another victory and the Hornets put 6 guys in the top 13 to win going away.  Andrew Ruoss, Charlie Forbes, Mark Giblin, Cuffie Winkler and Will Vinton (all seniors) went out in style.  Concord's return to prominence continued as the Raiders got a much appreciated second.  Chris Slate (2nd individually) and Pierce Conlon along with Andrew Meyer deserve praise for getting their school to their current position.  Joseph Feeley led little Red Lion Christian to its best-ever finish (3rd) with an excellent 5th place run while teammates.  RLC's Josh Cushing also had a fine season.
