FELTON - Despite threatening skies, high humidity and intermittent showers, the 47th annual Lake Forest Invitational cross country meet was held Saturday at Killens Pond State Park.

The premier early season meet, which attracted teams from throughout Delaware and surrounding states, saw upstate teams dominate the scenic 3.1-mile Killens Pond course.

Newark captured the girls Division I race while Thomas Jefferson from Alexandria, Va., won the boys' Division I race. Archmere won both the girls' and boys' Division II races.

Anna Brousell of Brandywine set a course record of 18:48 to win the girls Division I race. She shattered the old mark of 18:52 set in 2001 by Tatnall's Meredith Lambert.

"It was a great race for me today," Brousell said. "I'm real happy with my performance."

Rebekah Ricksecker of Sussex Tech was the top Downstate finisher in the girls' Division I race finishing in fifth place with a time of 20:10.

"It was a real tough race and everyone was working really hard," Ricksecker said. "There are a lot of strong teams here today. The Henlopen Conference is going to be solid this season."

Caesar Rodney's Elizabeth Paul followed Ricksecker across the finish line in sixth place. The two were the only two runners to finish in the top 15 among Downstate participants.

"There is a lot of competition upstate and the Downstate runners also look very good," Paul said. "It's going to be a good season. We are hoping to be a strong team and we are working very hard in practice to get better every day. We want to win the Henlopen Conference."

Caesar Rodney was the top Downstate team, finishing in fifth place overall while Dover placed 11th.

"If we can get some meets under our belt, I might be able to comment on how we are as a team," said CR coach Charlie Bell. "We have already had one meet rained out. I was hoping to get that in before today but we didn't.

"I'm pleased overall today. Elizabeth (Paul) needs to work on a few things (and) our team needs to work on some things, but we need to run meets most of all."

Caesar Rodney finished 10th overall in the boys' Division I standings. The finish was tops among Downstate schools. Dover and Sussex Tech finished 12th and 13th, respectively. No Downstate runners finished in the top 15.

Thomas Jefferson won the team title with three runners finishing 1-2-3 and six runners placing in the top 15.

In the girls' Division II race, Jen Betts of Cape Henlopen finished in 12th place to lead her team to a sixth-place team finish. Milford finished seventh while Lake Forest finished ninth and Smyrna 10th with Seaford 11th.

Andrew Rogan led the Vikings in the boys' Division II race, finishing 11th and leading the Cape Henlopen team to a third-place finish overall. Seaford finished in ninth place while Smyrna finished 14th.

"We were hoping both teams would finish in the top five," said Cape coach George Pepper. "The Lake Forest Invitational is always a nice meet. It gives everyone a look at how you compare to the rest of the state.

"There were not a lot of individual finishers in the top 15 from Downstate and I think this year is going to be one of those years that shows you how important the 3-4-5 runner is. The teams that can improve those runners during the season and form a good solid pack are going to be the teams to watch out for.

"The Henlopen Conference has some pretty good depth. You may not see the big-name star standouts that we have seen in the past but it is going to be an interesting season."
