CROSS COUNTRY 2001
GIRLS PREVIEW

Seventeen of last year's All State runners return so there should be many familiar names in prominent spots this season.  However, we all know what a major impact freshmen girls and injuries can have here so I won't even try to make any predictions.  The Division 2 team race should be very interesting ..... Seaford won last year in a tight one with Lake Forest and Ursuline and those three will be strong again as will Charter.  Brandywine and St. Mark's have together won 8 of the last 9 championships (4 each) and figure to battle again for Division 1 honors.  Cape, Padua, AI and Middletown would love to knock off the top 2 and are on verge of big years.

DIVISION 2

SEAFORD loses Jenn Willis but everyone else is back from last year's titleists.  Caitlyn McGroerty (so) leads the way with Greta Knapp, Kate Laprad, Christina Garmendia, Jen Abrams and Sara Huffman forming a solid squad who should be tough to beat.
LAKE FOREST has a strong nucleus with seniors Holly Wilson and Lena Ewing along with Monica Thomas and Kari Collins.  If Coach Blades can identify another runner or two from the new recruits the Spartans will be serious contenders.
URSULINE will miss Colleen Taylor badly but their strong tradition lives on.  Julie Taylor will try to pick up where her sister left off and is capable of doing it.  Kim and Jenna Whalen with Kelly Mark and Kathleen McLaughlin form a potentially solid top 5.
CHARTER swept through Flight B last year but should be more big meet oriented this time around.  The Force has good numbers and experience with Jackie Kozlowski, Emily and Sarah Smith, Natasha Frisby and Pooja Aysolah in the forefront.
ARCHMERE has reason to be optimistic as most of the varsity returns led by Kristen Travers, Amy Trelenberg and Katie Penza.
MILFORD lost mainstay Jessica Rivera but Amy Mallamo had a great freshman year and figures to be even better.
WILMINGTON CHRISTIAN could be a very solid team if they can get some help for All County performers Lydia Singer and Liz Arce.
TATNALL has Runner of Year Meredith Lambert returning for her senior year and is hoping to get more kids out for the team.
HODGSON has Ashley Whitesell who has improved each year and could have a great senior season.
ST. ANDREW'S always has a solid team and should again this year

DIVISION 1

BRANDYWINE returns  6 of 7 from last year's state meet team including Individual winner Jenn Kutney who closes out a tremendous career.  All Staters Kimmi Lopata and Alison Sanchez are back along with Leslie Wason, Jeanna Wood and Hilary Taylor ....... clearly the team to beat.
ST. MARK'S also has 6 of their top 7 back led by State runner-up Jacki Justison and All State Kristen Sullivan.  Nora Miller, Mandy Hewes, Lisa Brothwood-Goldfarb, Michelle Spadaro and Andrea Marinelli all have varsity experience ....... strong contender
CAPE HENLOPEN will be led by Jr Betsy Hicks with Brittany Morris and Tiffany Melendez  close behind.  Coach Pollock always gets a lot from his squad.
PADUA will count on reliable Erin Lord for leadership once again.  The Pandas also have the majority of team back including Beth Meany, Colleen Reid, Deanna Episcopo and Kate Hendrickson.  ...... will peak in November as usual
AI DUPONT was a very young team last year and is expecting to improve in '01.  Carly Anderson had a great frosh season and should get help from a large group of newcomers.
CAESAR RODNEY has a potential powerhouse with former State Champ Jill Hajec returning to join All  State sisters Kashante (Sr) and Kasheka (So) Codner.  Julie Wagner will help and if 5th runner develops CR could go right to the top.
MIDDLETOWN has a solid corps of returnees led by Sami Nimmerichter backed up by Jenn Fose, Dani Ward and Josie Dubois.  The addition of Laura Billings and track find Katelyn Ealer could make the Cavs a major force.
NEWARK has Enya Spence who showed flashes of ability as a frosh.
MCKEAN returns Olivia Fokas and Kristine Marsh plus adds track star Mandy Stille.  Could be much improved.
